“An anti-Semitic priest took part in the celebration of Israel’s Independence Day in Poland” – this is the title of an article published in the influential Israeli daily Haaretz. Journalists did not fail to remind that Tadeusz Rydzyk, who has been running the Catholic radio station Radio Maryja since 1991, has been repeatedly accused of promoting anti-Semitic content on the air of the medium. So his appearance at the party on the occasion of the celebration of Israel’s Independence Day in Poland surprised some, and even outraged others.
“Jews have a lot to hide”
“Father Tadeusz Rydzyk called Jews greedy, and his Catholic radio station accused Jews of being responsible for the Holocaust, but he nevertheless found himself as a guest at an embassy party,” thunders the Israeli daily. In the further part of the article, its author also cites other misdeeds of Father Rydzyk and the entire Radio Maryja over the last few years. One example is the situation in 2018. At that time, the historian Ewa Kurek stated that “The Jews have much to hide about their shameful participation in the annihilation of their own peopleThe listeners also heard that “Jews have always loved Germans.”
Father Rydzyk himself was also accused of promoting anti-Semitic content. The indignation was caused by his statement in 2007, when he said that the then president of Poland – Lech Kaczyński – is “aa scammer succumbing to the Jewish lobbyThe embassy intervened almost immediately – both in the government and in the episcopate – and Father Rydzyk’s words led to a storm at the diplomatic level.
“There is no justification for hosting Rydzyk in the embassy”
According to the Israeli daily: “Fr. Rydzyk, who runs the Catholic station Radio Maryja, has been repeatedly accused of promoting anti-Semitism over the years, and a 2008 US State Department report described his medium as ‘one of the most blatantly anti-Semitic in Europe'” – (quoted for rp.pl). Even so, he showed up at the embassy party anyway.
Rafał Pankowski, president of the Never Again foundation, also referred to the whole matter in the newspaper. – He is the godfather of contemporary far-right nationalism and anti-Semitism in Poland. It is symbolic and damaging to Israel’s reputation,” he told Haaretz. – There is no reasonable justification for hosting Rydzyk in the embassy – he added.
