I praise literature, “which turns our minds on”, in a manifesto
Euskaraz irakurri: “Gogoa pizten digun” literary gorazarre, manifestu batean
At the request of the Meettok Foundation, 76 Basque writers have signed the manifesto “What can only be learned through literature” to “consolidate and give prestige to reading, and claim the value of the book”.
The foundation, which emerged from the San Sebastian publishing house Meettok, states in a statement that the time has come to carry out “not too conventional initiatives”, and has positioned this praise along those lines.
Read the complete manifesto “What can only be learned with literature”.
In troubled times, when we feel adrift, literature always gives some coordinates. Anne Frank said it very clearly: “Free people will hardly realize what books mean to those of us who live under lock and key.” Literature puts us before the mirror and asks us: Are we free?
Something happens in your body when you read Homer. An old truth shakes you and opens your eyes. You become Ulysses inside the Trojan horse. “A classic, it is a book that never stops saying what it has to say,” Italo Calvino stated. He also reminded us that the classics shape future experience, providing models, content, terms of comparison, classification schemes, scales of values, paradigms of beauty. Every reading leaves a mark, even if we don’t feel it at the time.
Thanks to the imagination we have invented myths and stories; drawn the technology of tomorrow and dreamed of trips to the stars. Poetic intuitions have been precursors of the progress of science. Detailed chronicles lead us to the understanding of the compact structure of the atom. “Literature, including the oldest, oral, has the ability to produce ideas and sculpt perspectives that penetrate our interior and transform our spirit, whether we like it or not“. Italics are ours, Olga Tokarczuk’s phrase.
Literature must be open to everyone, without any restraint. universal access.
Because literature wakes us up and shakes us up, turns our minds on. It is fuel and it is fire. We read alone, but we are not alone when we read. Intertwined with the times and the characters that open up to us in the book, we land on fictional characters, to insinuate new traits upon returning from the trip. Because literature is the contradiction and nuance that we owe ourselves as individuals and as a society.
Reading may not make us better people, but it will leave the reader with hints of the breadth and diversity of the world. Likewise, sharing what we read with friends, acquaintances, classmates, members of the book club or on social networks will give us as much or more pleasure than reading itself: talking about books is a way of rewriting them. And the history of literature is the history of reading; It moves beyond public burnings, censorship, and the noise and fury of our electronic devices.
We may not be many, but it’s not just numbers that count. We form a well-articulated ecosystem: readers, writers, translators, editors, literary critics, booksellers, librarians… Literature unites us. That is why we want to consolidate and give prestige to this network, to vindicate the value of the book. Because what literature teaches us can only be learned by reading literature. Because literature talks about things that concern us all: courage, fear, friendship, death, love, solidarity.
Who reads knows why he reads. If you are one of those who do not read, you will have your reasons.
You can be calm, in any case. If we’ve learned anything from books, it’s that even if you don’t take care of literature, literature will always take care of you.
