Summer is usually synonymous with jazz in the Basque Country, and two of those responsible for it, the Vitoria-Gasteiz and Getxo jazz festivals, have presented their next editions today, which will take place from July 1 to 8 in the case of Álava contest and from June 28 to July 2 in the one from Biscay.
The 46th edition of the Vitoria-Gasteiz Jazz Festival will offer more than 50 musical performances with the unquestionable protagonism of “emerging young musicians”, according to the organization, and with good pre-sale data: “We have better sales than in recent years and there are still fifteen days for the festival”, they have expressed.
The bulk of the program takes place from July 3 to 8 at the Mendizorrotza Teatro Principal y Polideportivo, but there will also be free performances in various venues in Vitoria-Gasteiz and Álava from the 1st.
The main programming at Mendizorrotza will start on July 5, and you can see Maria Schneider and Oslo Jazz Ensamble (July 5), Brad Mehldau Trío (July 6), The Bad Plus (July 7) and Silvia Pérez Cruz ( July 8).
HerriJazz Ibiltaria
The gasteiztarra festival will serve as the first stop for the HerriJazz Ibiltaria initiative, focused on promoting new jazz formations and their diffusion throughout different towns in the Basque Country.
Within the framework of the Jazza Parkean programme, the first of the five planned concerts will be held. At 6:00 p.m. on July 1, the Eira & Band quintet will perform, with Musikene students and led by Eider Elorza.
Getxo
Before, the one in charge of opening the jazz festival season will be that of Getxo, which will be held between June 28 and July 2. Muxikebarri’s paid concerts will feature the participation of Jazzmeia Horn (June 28), Kurt Elling (June 29), Marc Ribot (June 30), Al Di Meola (July 1) and Dave Holland (July 2 ).
In addition, there will also be performances by the winning bands of the group contest and free concerts in the streets of Algorta.
The San Sebastian Jazz Festival will be held this year from July 21 to 25.
