Velvet Spoon Studio has made another horror film that is getting loud. At the beginning of the year, the distributor presented a “horror like never before” in the form of “Skinamarink”. On June 23, in Polish cinemas, we will be able to see another production made in the form of found footage, i.e. a technique that stylizes the image as a found amateur recording, and the events are presented from the perspective of the camera. The most popular productions shot in this style are “Blair Witch Project” or “REC”.
Outback is the scariest movie of the year? Viewers ran out of the screenings
This time Velvet Spoon presents the movie “The Outwaters”. This is the story of four friends who went to the Mojave Desert to shoot a music video. On the spot, they encounter an incomprehensible phenomenon that completely distorts their perception of reality. The creators combined the well-known film technique with inspirations from HP Lovecraft’s literature. Effect? There were voices that it was the scariest movie of the year.
“The director mercilessly calms the viewers down, only to tear apart the dark abyss beneath them and throw them into a well of madness,” Bloody Disgusting, a horror website, reviewed the film. Danny Leigh of the Financial Times called the production “an avant-garde Kubrick odyssey”, while Noel Murray of the Los Angeles Times said the film “may be dull or confusing to some, but Banfitch’s approach has admirable integrity.” “Compellingly terrifying,” concluded K. AUstin Collins of Rolling Stone.
The film had its world premiere on February 9, and audience reactions exceeded the expectations of the creators. Robbie Banfitch managed not only to win over respected critics to his work, but also to really terrify viewers – to the point that many of them ran out of the cinema during screenings in the US and UK.
Despite encouraging announcements and reviews, the film received an average rating of 4.1 on IMDB, which is not a great result. Filmweb users who had already had the opportunity to see the production were even more harsh on it – here the average rating was 3.6. However, the disproportion in ratings is best seen on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers gave the film a 73 percent rating. freshness, which suggests that we are dealing with a good horror film, and viewers “rewarded” the creators 46 percent, which in turn indicates that we will not leave the cinema satisfied.
