Lisa Lopes, known as Left Eye, was an American rapper and member of the group TLC. In addition to being very involved in the work of the girlband, the artist designed their outfits for the band, and also contributed to the creation of graphics for the artists’ albums and their music videos. Throughout her career, she won four Grammy Awards and recorded the single “Never Be the Same Again” with Melanie C of the Spice Girls. To this day, she remains the only member of TLC to have released a solo album.
The artist died in a car accident on April 25, 2002 at the age of only 31. The tragedy occurred while filming a documentary in Honduras. She was in the car when another vehicle blocked his way, the vehicle swerved off the road with tragic consequences. The aforementioned film was released in 2007 as “The Last Days of the Left Eye”.
Andre and Lisa’s tumultuous relationship almost ended tragically
In 1992, the artist began dating Andre Rison, an American football player whom she met at a club. Their relationship was quite tumultuous from the start. As we read on the papermag.com portal, the couple was seen arguing in the parking lot of the supermarket at an early stage of the relationship. Rison allegedly attacked his partner and even fired a gun to dissuade his friends from the idea of interfering in the conflict. The athlete was arrested for this, but the charges against him were dropped.
A toxic relationship led to a high-profile event that could have ended in tragedy. On June 8, 1994, Rison went out with friends to a club, his girlfriend also partied, but without him. The football player claims that he returned around 5 am completely sober. Unlike the rapper who was supposed to show up in the driveway of the mansion and yell at her partner.
“I knew she drank a little, but I had no idea what upset her so much. She started hitting me in the face. I finally grabbed her and asked her what happened,” the athlete reported arguing in an interview with “People”. Rison admitted that he slapped Lopes, but “not to hurt her, but to calm her down.” When the method did not work, he threw the woman on the bed, sat on her, but according to his account, he still could not calm his partner down. “I left. I went for a 20-kilometer walk” – says the athlete.
“I could replace a house, but I can’t bring a girl back to life”
Rison spent the morning at the home of teammate Jason Phillips, completely oblivious to what was going on at his house. He arrived at the residence around nine in the morning, saw a line of fire engines in front of him. “I couldn’t believe it. I just sat down and cried,” recalls the Lopes boy. Reggie Brown, Rison’s brother, reportedly saw the rapper standing outside the mansion, staring at the flames, screaming that she didn’t care.
Lopes was charged with setting fire to her home, but was released on $75,000 bail. Her lawyer, Darryl Cohen, took the defense that his client had been beaten and abused. “Lisa is afraid for her life,” he testified. Rison categorically denied the lawyer’s words. “It hurts me because I’m not like that. We did everything together – shopping, cooking, laughing, crying, partying,” she says about her relationship with her partner.
The couple did not part after this incident. Andre and Lisa continued to meet and even planned to get married, but an accident thwarted the lovers’ plans. After the death of his partner, Rison confessed that he cried many tears, but none of them shed because of the loss of the house. “I could replace the house, but I will not bring back the life of a certain girl I had,” the athlete is quoted by People. Interestingly, Rison also met his current wife at the club. According to hitc.com, the couple has been together since 2009. The woman’s name is Lisa Lopez.
