Nikki Allford visited many specialists and was sent away every time. She’d usually heard that some people had that, that their periods were very painful and they just weren’t lucky. Her problems began when she was 19 and for several years no one could help her, we read on the site . For a while, she went to the gynecologist twice a week because the pain was unbearable. She was eventually scheduled for surgery to determine if cancer was developing in her reproductive system, but only cysts were found and she was not diagnosed for several years.
The woman is very angry with the doctors. He believes that they have huge gaps in knowledge. Adenomyosis is not a very rare condition. It affects an average of 1 in 500 women. Meanwhile, even specialists could confuse it with endometriosis, and one of them admitted that he must have googled it, because he had never heard of adenomyosis.
During one of my visits, the doctor told me that I was pronouncing endometriosis incorrectly
Allford said.
How does adenomyosis manifest itself?
The 32-year-old admitted she could tick off all possible symptoms. It is primarily a huge, stabbing pain in the lower abdomen, which he compares to labor contractions. The woman also complains that menstrual bleeding is so heavy that she has to change tampons every 20 minutes and put two layers of sanitary pads on her bed. In addition, he has a problem with bloating:
My stomach is so bloated I look pregnant. It happened that people asked me about the due date.
Another unpleasant consequence of this disease is the difficulty in getting pregnant. And when it does, there is a high risk of miscarriage. Allford is the mother of three children, but there have been many more attempts to have children. As many as seven times she failed to carry the pregnancy to term.
Treatment of adenomyosis? Pain relief and removal of the uterus
Doctors focus on inhibiting the development of the disease through hormonal therapy and the introduction of anti-inflammatory and painkillers to improve the quality of life of patients. To get rid of the existing disease outbreaks, it is done surgically. Sometimes this involves complete removal of the uterus.
When I was 29, I begged the doctor to order a hysterectomy [usunięcia części lub całej macicy – przyp. red.]. All I heard was: What if you want more children in the future?
– said Nikki Allford, who was already a mother of three at the time and did not plan to enlarge the family. But living in constant, piercing pain didn’t look like a pleasant prospect.
The woman decided to speak out loud about this disease so that as many people as possible would know about it. First of all, those who suffer from it, but also doctors, so that they can correctly diagnose it in their patients. Nikki set up a website to raise public awareness.
