Participants of the BRICS meetings, which will be held in South Africa, will have diplomatic immunity. The corresponding message was published on the website of the government of the republic.
The presence of diplomatic immunity means that a person is not subject to the jurisdiction of the host state, has immunity and cannot be arrested or detained.
The document, signed by Foreign Minister of South Africa Naledi Pandor, states that the agency grants immunity to participants in two meetings: a meeting at the level of BRICS Foreign Ministers, which will be held in Cape Town on June 1-2, and the Association Summit, which is scheduled for August 22-24 in Johannesburg .
The South African authorities justified their decision by the provisions of the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations of 1946 and the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the Specialized Agencies of 1947, adopted by a resolution of the UN General Assembly.
South Africa announced diplomatic immunity for summit participants after the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin in March.
