“: Volume 3” already in the trailers promised to be a movie, maybe not entirely sublime, but certainly much more serious, less carefree and definitely darker than the previous two parts. I was afraid it would turn out to be a cheesy and pretentious mush, but it’s not. It is a most touching production, but at the same time it provides everything for which viewers like the universe so much. To put it simply: it is a film about a raccoon and other animals, but it is not infantile in the slightest.
“Guardians of the Galaxy 3” is a tearjerker and spectacular action movie
Already in the first scenes of the new “Guardians of the Galaxy” I felt a wild need to cuddle and stroke my domestic dogs and cats. In this part, we find out how it happened that the raccoon Rocket became a saucy and brilliant inventor. This is nothing cheerful, because the genesis of his transformation is dark and very easy to translate into the truest terms.
Rocket gained his abilities through a series of very painful and terrifying experiments conducted by the Great Evolutionist (Chukwudi Iwuji). James Gunn is not a bit of a klutz – he shows this fear and pain of the animal in a very suggestive way. It was really hard for me to look at the screen at times, because although I know that there are digital animations in these scenes, the ruthlessness of the mad scientist here is so real that it makes the skin crawl.
It just so happens that years later, the Great Evolutionist finds out that Rocket is alive and desperately wants to get him back in order to cut out his brain and study it thoroughly. The manhunt is on and the raccoon’s life hangs in the balance. The other Guardians embark on a difficult mission without hesitation to save their friend from imminent death. In the process, they find out why Rocket never wants to talk about his past. Throughout the mission, they’re all battling their own demons as well: Peter Quill (still can’t get over the fact that the Gamora (Zoe Saldana) he loved is no more – he’s bereaved, depressed and drunk. “Alternative” Gamora tries explain to him that she really is not the same person who loved him and now has a new life Nebula (Karen Gillan), in turn, is annoyed that Drax (Dave Bautista) does what she wants and, in her opinion, is more disturbing than she helps everyone else, and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) is tired of not being listened to or taken seriously.
James Gunn elegantly bids farewell to Marvel
It all adds up to a psychologically believable and very humanistic story about friendship, dealing with trauma of various origins, empathy, the need for wise conversation, giving yourself and others a second chance, as well as about the ethical treatment of animals and all forms of life in general. It sounds hard, but it is given in a human way and in such a way that you can identify with it. Because James Gunn in his script does not follow the path of pure melodrama – it is full of jokes, sarcastic retorts, as well as appropriately spectacular explosions and duels. The whole thing was, of course, framed by a properly cross-sectional soundtrack with the greatest hits from the last few decades.
It is also worth noting that this is a relatively long film – it has 150 minutes – and yet it goes on so dynamically and coherently that I did not feel tired during the screening, which is a nice change, for example, after such a prolonged and unnecessary embellishments of the second part of “Black Panthers”. Here, too, I was captivated in the new role of Will Poulter, who as Adam Warlock perfectly used his comedic potential – and he has really effective action scenes. First of all, the voice actor for Rocket showed that in dubbing you can create a character full of dramatic jam.
“Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3” is also the director’s love letter to the characters and a successful example of how you can make a film that is as entertaining as possible, which at the same time tells about important and difficult things, and is not unbearably pathetic at the same time. If this is a prediction of what James Gunn will be doing as one of the new heads of DC movies, then there is some hope that things will change for the better there.
