The World Press Photo frames the war, the climate crisis and the abandonment of those who suffer

The World Press Photo (WPP) photography awards has chosen as the photo of the year An image captured by Ukrainian documentary filmmaker, photographer and journalist Evgeniy Maloletka in Mariupol, Ukraine, after an airstrike on a hospital maternity ward.

The Open Format Award goes to Mohamed Mahdy, for his collaborative project with the residents of the Al Max neighborhood of Alexandria, Egypt, to preserve the memory of a rapidly disappearing fishing village and connect it to the rest of the world through an interactive website.

The four global winners were selected from 24 regional winners, who were chosen from more than 60,000 still and multimedia images submitted by 3,752 entrants from 127 countries.
The president of the global jury is the photo editor of the New York Times and co-founder of Diversify Photo, Brent Lewis.
These stories, along with other winners, will be shown in an exhibition that will visit 60 cities, including Vitoria-Gasteiz.
