On July 23, 1973, a masked man entered the Kreditbanken at Norrmalmstorg 2 in Stockholm. It was 30-year-old Janne Olsson. The man did not ask for money. Instead, he held three hostages and waited for the police to arrive.

After a while, officers appeared at the main building of the bank. Two of them managed to get inside the building, but after a clash with the attacker, they had to retreat. Olsson demanded that the police immediately release his friend Clark Olofsson from prison. The services were to bring him to the facility where the 30-year-old was holding the hostages. Moreover, the prisoner was to be equipped with two submachine guns, bulletproof vests and two helmets. The police were to deliver a fast car and 3 million Swedish crowns to the bank’s headquarters.

The services agreed to the demands of the criminal. Around 4:00 p.m., Olofsson was brought into the bank. As it turned out, there was another man inside the building. The bandits locked him and the hostages in a separate room, and then began to devise an escape plan. The next day they barricaded themselves with the imprisoned people in the vault. Olsson told the police that he would kill one of the detainees if the officers did not guarantee him and his friend immunity. The services did not agree to these demands and tried to free the hostages.

The services tried to free the hostages with tear gas. However, the criminals did not allow the technicians to drill the required holes. A shootout ensued, in which one of the drillers was injured. The attackers then changed tactics. They put ropes around the necks of the hostages, then tied them to the lockers in the vault. They gave this information to the police so that they would not try to lure them out again with the gas.

One of Olsson’s hostages was 23-year-old Kristen Enmark. The woman admitted that she was not afraid of criminals at all, in fact she trusted them completely. It was she who negotiated with the Prime Minister of Sweden the conditions under which the criminals could leave the bank. The woman believed that the gunmen were not responsible for the shooting in the building, but the police. She demanded the head of state to release her along with Olsson and his friend. She was defending all the time. As she later admitted, during the robbery she persuaded one of the hostages to let himself be shot in the leg. This was to show the services that the threats of criminals are not unfounded. – I said: But Sven, it’s just legs! How can you say that to someone who’s about to get shot? – after years.

Despite the actions of the criminals, the police decided to use chemicals anyway. Around 9:30 p.m., the hostages were released. Kristen immediately quit her job at the bank. She started studying, she wanted to become a psychologist. In 2015, she published a book in which she described the unlucky event and what she had given to one of the attackers. Based on her story, the term Stockholm syndrome was coined, i.e. a mental state in which the victim of violence connects with the perpetrator emotionally.
