Eating foods rich in omega-3s and B vitamins in tandem can help reduce the risk of dementia. As dietitian Vasilisa Ponomareva told MedikForum, such products include: fish, dairy products, greens, offal, starchy vegetables.
Fish, especially oily fish, are rich in omega-3s and B12, and eating fish has been shown to slow cognitive decline and reduce the risk of dementia by 20%.
“The best fish are those that swim in cold water and eat other fish like mackerel and salmon, sardines and anchovies. Herring and smoked fish are also excellent,” the expert noted.
As for the B vitamins, the key ones in this case are B6, B12 and folic acid.
Milk and dairy products are a good source of B12 and folic acid in green leafy vegetables, while fish is a good source of vitamin B6, along with organ meats, potatoes and other starchy vegetables.
However, it is worth remembering that this type of diet can only reduce risk if you stick to it for many years.
