The film is the Polish version of the Italian production “Figli” (“Children”) directed by Giuseppe Bonito, produced in 2020. It was directed by Andrzej Saramanowicz, who returned to the game after 11 years. It tells the story of a middle-class family that consists of a mom, dad, and daughter. Their idyll will be interrupted by a new member of the family. As a result of the events of one heavily drunk party night, Janek will come into the world – a wonderful, but completely unplanned gift from fate (i.e. an accident).
A flop in cinemas, a hit in streaming
The reviews of Bejbis were varied, but most often there were comparisons to the director’s earlier films, i.e. Lejdis and Testosterone. Critics pointed out that the production would probably appeal to those viewers who like Saramanowicz’s previous works.
The aforementioned “Lejdis” was a real cinema hit. In 2008, this film was seen by the largest number of Polish viewers. In total, it was watched by over 2.5 million viewers. Today it is difficult to achieve such a ceiling by any film, but no one expected that “Bejbis” would be viewed so tragically.
“Baby” – trailer
Saramanowicz’s latest film was released in cinemas on October 22, 2022 and only 34.1 thousand people saw it on its opening weekend. viewers. The second week was a bit better, but when “Letters to M. 5” appeared in cinema repertoires, everyone forgot about “Bejbis”. Only about 130,000 people saw the production in cinemas in total. people.
The film appeared on the Amazon Prime Video streaming platform four months after its theatrical release. From the very beginning, it was very eagerly watched, and currently it is the most watched film in Poland on this website. It even managed to overtake the Oscar-winning film “Everywhere At Once”, which is still shown in some cinemas. The podium is closed by the action movie “The Perfect Revenge” in third place in the ranking.
This is not the first time that a Polish film performs poorly in cinemas, but is doing great in streaming. It seems that since the pandemic, we are less willing to pay for Polish productions in cinemas. We prefer to watch them at home. This is also seen by some producers who immediately publish their films on streaming services. This was the case, e.g. with the continuations of “365 days”, which premiered on Netflix.
