There are women-only parking spaces in this country. Reason? Not at all what you think

Frauenparkplatz is a German initiative that attracts more and more supporters. Do women-only parking spaces discriminate against men? It’s about something completely different.

It is not surprising there, on the contrary – it is almost obvious. Our western neighbors took care of women behind the wheel. They are the ones who take care of children more often and, especially in the first stage of their development, are with them all the time. So often they have to suddenly get into the car and go to the doctor, pharmacy or simply to the store to replenish the supply of diapers or wet wipes. They must then take the child with them, specially designed for their needs Frauenparkplatz offers, above all, much larger parking spaces.

Mocking comments and online memes suggest a mythical lack of parking skills in women, but that’s not the case. Parking in such a marked place provides more space for taking the child out of the car with the car seat, and packing the shopping into the car.

Parking spaces for women only. How do they look?

The law requiring parking managers to designate Frauenparkplatz applies to individual Länder. For example – as we read in spidersweb.pl – in Baden-Wittemberg they must constitute 10 percent of parking spaces in a given car park, and in Brandenburg – 30 percent.

There are detailed guidelines on what this type of parking space should look like. First of all, it must be properly marked, well lit and close to the entrance to the facility, informs polskiobserwator.de. Such a place should also be within the field of view of video surveillance or parking personnel, and have an alarm switch.

Parking spaces for women only. What for and why?

Of course, these places are not just for mothers. The guidelines described above indicate that it is primarily about the safety of women and better protection against physical or sexual assault. This type of threat may appear, for example, in vast, underground car parks – especially in their farthest recesses, furthest away from the entrance to a given facility.

Anyway, the solution in the form Frauenparkplatz some lands have just introduced after the attack that took place in such a complex – notes spidersweb.pl. These provisions are therefore intended to increase women’s sense of security.

“My mum works nights and I always worry about her when she has to walk from the parking lot”

Fraunparkplatz became the focus of attention on TikTok. They arouse great excitement especially among foreigners who came across such a solution for the first time. Your “first experience” with Frauenparkplatz reported, for example, an American running an account called @big.meech. “Wonderful,” she said in the video.

Another TikTok user expresses surprise at the very idea of designating such parking spaces. “Only women can park here?” he asks incredulously. “They are closer to the entrance and have cameras. So they are safer” – Internet users explain under the recording published by her.

It’s actually a very cool thing. I wish there was something like this in America too. My mother works nights and I always worry about her when she has to walk back from the parking lot

– notes another Internet user.

Another commenter notes that while women-specific spaces are a good thing, “the sad thing is we need them at all.”

Can men use them too?

Parking spaces for women also raise objections. Some accuse German legislators of sexism and discrimination against men, who, after all, also go shopping with small children and bring dimensions to the car. It turns out, however, that many places designated in this way can also be used by fathers.

What’s more, for parking in this type of place – even if you are a man traveling alone – you are not threatened with a fine or any legal liabilitybecause the German Highway Code does not recognize the concept of women’s parking spaces. So it all boils down to the so-called good will of the driver. In addition, as we read in many comments – These places can also be used by people who simply feel threatened.

Let us remind you that there is a similar solution in Poland, e.g. under supermarkets in Poland – places for pregnant women and families are designated under some stores.
