She was 29 when she died in a plane crash. A letter from her husband and a rosary were found with her

On March 14, 1980, Anna Jantar was returning from the United States to Poland. The plane she was on crashed just 900 meters from the airport where she was supposed to land. Today marks 43 years since the death of the legendary artist.

Anna Jantar, actually Anna Maria Kukulska née Szmeterling, was an icon of Polish pop. Each of us knows such hits as “So Much Sun in the Whole City”, “Nothing Can Last Forever” or “The Hardest First Step”. The artist has collaborated with, among others, Stanisław Sojka and the band Perfect. She went on concert tours all over the world. Unfortunately, the one to the United States turned out to be the last one.

She was extremely talented. This song was the ticket to a career

Jantar showed musical abilities from an early age. At the beginning of her career, she performed in student clubs, and in December 1968, in cooperation with the Polne Kwiat group, she recorded the song “Po ten red flower”. Her first solo hit was “The hardest first step”. It was this song that brought Anna fame and popularity.

On March 14, 1980, she flew the Il-62 “Mikołaj Kopernik” plane from New York to Warsaw. The plane crashed on approach to land. Nobody survived. After Anna Jantar’s death, the forensic doctor gave the artist’s mother a rosary that Anna had been holding in her hand during the disaster. The day before her death, Anna Jantar visited the Polish consulate. Security commander Tadeusz Gierałt later said that the artist talked about her daughter all the time. She was comforted by the thought that she would soon see Natalka. Natalia Kukulska regularly publishes photos of her mother on social media.

Anna Jantar and Jaroslaw Kukulski. The story of their love

Anna Jantar met Jarosław Kukulski while working with the band Waganci. The band, which Kukulski was the founder, was looking for a soloist, and Jantar applied for the casting. There was an instant spark between them. They got married in a civil ceremony in 1970 and in a church wedding in 1971. In 1976, they welcomed a daughter, Natalie, into the world. At the time of the catastrophe, Jantar had a letter from her husband with her. Its content has been revealed.

I love you with all my heart and you can count on me in every situation, and whether you read my confession as weakness or as love that needs help, it depends only on you. Our happiness, Anusia, depends only on ourselves. But for that to happen, we both need to want it. I kiss you hard, your Jarek. P.S. This letter to you is the only one and the last one. If I had to write it a second time, you’d probably have to finish it yourself.
