The State Department authorized the Pentagon to sell Taiwan missiles for F-16 fighter jets, as well as other systems, for $619 million, according to the US Department of Defense Security Cooperation Agency, which is responsible for the supply of military equipment and weapons abroad under intergovernmental contracts.

The agency’s report clarifies that Taiwanese representatives requested permission to purchase from the United States 100 HARM anti-radar missiles, 200 AMRAAM (Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile) missiles, as well as other systems and spare parts.

The agency emphasizes that the proposed sale “is in the national, economic and security interests of the United States.” Arms deliveries to Taiwan “will enhance the security of the recipient and will contribute to political stability, military balance, economy and progress in the region.” At the same time, it is noted that “the proposed sale of equipment and the provision of support will not change the basic balance of military forces in the region.”

The US administration has already notified Congress of this decision. Congressmen now have 30 days to consider a potential deal and possibly block it. If the deal is approved, Lockheed Martin and Raytheon Missiles & Defense will be the main contractors.

The Pentagon emphasizes that arms sales will not harm US combat readiness.
