And it is that, in addition to the Silver Bear by Sofia Otero, the film has been awarded with two awards granted by independent juries, outside the official section. One of them is the recognition of the German cinema association, and the second, that of the readers of the Morgenpost newspaper.
After last year’s premiere of the social short film Cuerdas at the Critics’ Week at the Cannes Film Festival, Urresola has premiered his feature film this Wednesday, February 22, at the prestigious Berlin Film Festival, where it received a moving 10-minute ovation.
The film 20,000 Species of Bees tells the story of Lucia (Sofia Otero), a transsexual girl whose classmates still call her Aitor, her old name. In order to escape the environment that she suffers at school, she looks forward to the arrival of summer. Her mother, Ane, plunged into a professional and sentimental crisis, takes advantage of her vacation to go with her three children to her mother’s house, where her aunt Lourdes also lives, linked to raising her bees. This summer will change their lives, as it will force them to decide how they want to show themselves to others.
This film was shot over seven weeks in the summer of 2022 in various locations in the Basque Country, including Llodio and Hendaia. Along with Otero, Patricia López Arnaiz, Ane Gabarain, Itziar Lazkano, Martxelo Rubio, Sara Cózar, Miguel Garcés, Unax Hayden and Andere Garabieta participate in the film.
