This year’s “winners” of the infamous Golden Raspberry Awards will be announced on March 11, 2023, the day before the Oscars. The list of nominees includes the most famous films of the last year, including “Blondynka”, “Morbius” or the Polish “365 days”, as well as well-known names, including Tom Hanks. However, the nomination for a novice, relatively unknown actress aroused controversy.

The record holder of the Golden Raspberry 2023 is “Blondynka” – a criticized film about the life of Marilyn Monroe with Ana De Armas in the lead role. The organizers decided that the production “posthumously uses” this character and awarded her not only a nomination not only in the main category, but also for the worst, inconsistent with the facts script and the worst direction (a total of as many as 8 nominations). Tom Hanks (for his portrayal of Gepetto in Zemeckis’ “Pinocchio” and Tom Parker in “Elvis”) and Pete Davidson (for his voice in “Marmaduke” and a cameo in “Good Mourning”) also received more than one nomination.
Both Disney’s “Pinocchio” and “Good Mourning” are the most critically criticized next to “Blonde” – the former for being “a completely unnecessary and strangely horrific remake”, the latter for being “an unfunny marijuana comedy that did the impossible scoring a zero on Rotten Tomatoes. While these nominations evoke laughter, the candidacy of Ryan Kiera Armstrong for the title of worst actress outraged Internet users.
“Golden Raspberry” will discourage her from acting?
Armstrong starred opposite Zac Efron in Firestarter, about the daughter of a man who takes part in a medical experiment. As a result, the girl discovers that she has supernatural powers – she develops pyrokinetic abilities.
The performer of this role was criticized, but the defenders emphasize that she was only 11 years old at the time of recording the production, and she was nominated for the Golden Raspberry Award as a 12-year-old. In their opinion, the young actress has a chance to gain skills and experience, and the infamous award may discourage her from practicing her profession. The organizers decided to react to the voices of indignation and removed Armstrong’s name from the list.

John Wilson, chief of staff responsible for organizing the event, wrote in an official statement. In the past, it happened that young actors were nominated, e.g. Jake Lloyd for Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace and Macaulay Culkin for The Lord of the Book. This year, the regulations have been changed – from now on, only adult actors and creators can be nominated for the Golden Raspberry Awards.
