She started as a cleaner, had a different name. Today she is an Oscar-winning actress. You know her from “The Crown”

The thriller “The Night Manager” and the series about the life of the royal family “The Crown” ensured her distinction in the form of Golden Globes, and for the role of Queen Anne in “The Favourite” she received a prestigious statuette of the Academy. Although today Olivia Colman is one of the most respected British actresses, her professional beginnings did not indicate that her everyday life would look like this.

“I could still do it”

Colman is the daughter of a nurse and a licensed real estate manager. Her parents were not connected to the art world, but her mother interrupted her ballet studies to try acting. At the age of 16, she starred in her first school play, and although she remembers the experience very positively, she was not yet convinced that she wanted to devote herself to this profession for the rest of her life.

I wasn’t very good at science, but I took part in a play, and I thought, “I like this.” I was a cheerful child, but not very confident. Being someone else was amazing. I could do things that I could never do as me.

– she recalled in an interview for “Zwierciadło”. Her family also offered her a teaching career, and although Colman tried her hand at a teachers’ school in Cambridge, she gave up this job. She became a cleaner to earn a living. It was thanks to her decision to stay in the city that she met her husband, Ed Sinclar, who was studying there at the time. The couple had three children. The work itself – cleaning houses – the actress did not complain.

I really loved this job. I had pure job satisfaction. I could still do it if it wasn’t for all this

she confessed.

Today, hardly anyone remembers his real name

While school performances timidly instilled in her a love of acting, the student theater permanently bound her to this profession. Thanks to her experience at Cambridge University Footlights Dramatic Club, she decided to apply to acting school. Then she also adopted the name that stuck to her for years. Not everyone knows that the award-winning actress’s real name is not Olivia, but Sarah. In 1995, she starred in the Channel 4 series “The Word” under the pseudonym Colly. At school, however, this turned out to be insufficient – a woman named Sarah Coleman was already registered with the British actors’ union Equity.

One of my best friends in college was named Olivia, and I’ve always loved her name. I was never Sarah. They always called me Colly, so I’m not sorry that no one calls me by my real name these days.

told The Independent. She graduated from the acting school in 1999 and in 2000 she started acting in subsequent BBC, ITV and Channel 4 comedy series – “Bruiser”, “People Like Us”, “Look Around You”, “Black Books”, “The Office” and ” The Time of Your Life”.

Olivia Colman recently worked on the Disney+ Marvel miniseries Secret Invasion and the Willie Wonka musical Wonka. She also lent her voice to one of the characters in the English-language version of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
