Nacho Cano rejects from Mexico that the Spanish apologize for the conquest: “It doesn’t make sense”

The musician Nacho Cano has rejected that the Spanish have to apologize for the conquest that took place 500 years ago in Mexico. He has done it in Mexico City, where he presents a musical that, however, celebrates the country and seeks to vindicate the history of the historical character of Malinche.

“Maybe we are the ones who have to apologize to those who come in 500 years for how we left the planet for them, but we apologize for what other people did 500 years ago because it does not make sense“, Cano assured in a press conference from Mexico.

It is precisely this musical that motivated the controversial project of an Aztec pyramid in the Hortaleza district of Madrid. It is a theater that will be called ‘Malinche’, it will have a capacity for 1,326 people and a surface area of ​​5,000 meters.

The former member of the famous band Mecano has highlighted how important it is to reflect on the environment in relation to issues such as water and pollution, and has said that it is precisely about current affairs on what people should focus their attention in order to claim who deserves it.

The controversy over forgiveness began in March 2019, when the Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador He asked by letter to the King of Spain Felipe VI and Pope Francis to apologize to the indigenous people for the conquest of Mexico, something he continues to insist on.

At the time, the Government of Spain considered that “the arrival 500 years ago of the Spanish to the current Mexican lands cannot be judged in light of contemporary considerations“.

Instead, Pope Francis sent a letter on September 27 in which he recognized “the mistakes of the past” and he reiterated his request for “forgiveness for personal and social sins” committed by the Church during the conquest and evangelization of present-day Mexico.

For his part, Cano focuses on enjoying looking at the good things that this cultural fusion brought before thinking about the negative, and that was precisely what led him to make “Malinche” an ode to the country, which he considers his second home. For ten years Cano carried out an exhaustive investigation on the history of Malinalli, a woman of Nahua origin who was given to the conqueror Hernán Cortés when he set foot in the territory that Mexico now occupies. Later she was his translator, his lover and the woman who led him by the hand until the victory over Moctezuma in Tenochtitlan, where Mexico City currently sits. This led to Malinche being identified as a traitor to the homeland over the years.
