The 80th Golden Globes ceremony could not be alien to the race scandals that made last year, for the first time, the gala not be televised involved in the controversy. His host, the African-American comedian Jerrod Carmichael, has not avoided making numerous comments on this fact during his applauded first intervention.
Thus, in his monologue, he recalled the reason why in 2022 the NBC chain decided not to broadcast these awards, to which the industry and the actors turned their backs: because the Hollywood Foreign Press Association -which awards the awards- It didn’t have any black members until George Floyd died, he joked.
“I’m here because I’m black,” said the comedian forcefully. “One day you’re making mint pennyroyal at home and the next you’re invited to be the black face of a controversial white organization,” he continued.
The humorist explained that when he was called to present this ceremony he had a “racial moral dilemma”, although he finally accepted.
The “glamour” of the red carpets, the applause and the celebratory atmosphere at the cinema faded completely in 2022, when the NBC network decided not to televise the gala due to the rejection of the American film industry to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), organizer of the awards.
All this after years of complaints about their bad habits and that an investigation by the Los Angeles Times newspaper came to light that discredited the group in charge of voting for the awards since 1943, whose structure and operation gradually deteriorated until it became one of the most criticized institutions of the audiovisual industry.
After the controversy, the HFPA has carried out an image laundering campaign and internal changes, including the change of its bases or the decision to add to its board 21 new members (blacks, Asians, women and Latinos) to ensure the diversity and equity of its jury.
