Swiss prosecutors interrogate FIFA chief Infantino in abuse of power case

Swiss prosecutors Ulrich Weder and Hans Maurer have re-interrogated International Football Federation (FIFA) President Gianni Infantino in a criminal case of abuse of power. This is reported by the newspaper Le Monde.

As recalled by the publication, the first interrogation of Infantino took place in April 2022. The head of FIFA is accused of incitement to abuse of power, violation of official secrets and obstruction of the investigation. In particular, Swiss prosecutors are investigating three alleged meetings between Infantino and former Swiss Attorney General Michael Lauber in 2016 and 2017, who led investigations into FIFA between 2015 and 2019. It is believed that Infantino was looking for information about the investigation in order to influence the course of these investigations.

The initiation of a criminal case against Infantino became known on July 30, 2020. It was also reported that a case had been brought against the chief prosecutor of the Upper Valais, Rinaldo Arnold.

Infantino was elected President of FIFA in February 2016. In June 2019, he was re-elected for a second term.
