Violence against women, gang warfare, among other topics that will be explored in the Nómade Selecta 2022 exhibition

More of 40 artists international and national will be part of the international exhibition of contemporary art called Select Nomad 2022, which opens this Tuesday at the MAAC, under the curatorship of the critic and theoretician Hernan Pacurucu and the visual artist Victor Hugo Bravo.

This project was born about eight years ago, and as its name says, it has been a nomadic proposal that has been set up in cities of Sweden, Poland, Canary Islands, Chile, and Ecuador. The current show is a special edition, as defined by Pacurucu. “What you are going to see is a kind of cut from the Nomad biennial, a selection that aims to account for all these years of work, for them both artists who set up the first nomadic settlements and also artists who are working very currently have been invited. ”, indicates in an interview with this newspaper.

“We are going to have a good selection, a good variety,” aim.

Victor Munoz, from Colombia, is one of the international artists participating in this biennial. His proposal is aimed at victims of conflict and symbolic reparation. “There is always a constant planting of how to fix memory or how memory is preserved”, mentions.

His project consists of the exhibition of some 200 napkins, which he collected for four years, while working as a public official in a cultural space. Each napkin bears coffee stains “made by a deteriorated coffee pot, a broken coffee pot, which has a lot to do with memory.”

“It is an incomplete, fragmented, elusive, failed issue, and above all as in a conflict in Colombia, where memory is a subject in tension (…) from these napkins some logs of my days as bureaucrats are configured”, explains the artist.

the chilean artist Gabriela Carmona brings an installation consisting of a three-piece photoperformance, in which violence against women is brought into dialogue through her body. “On the side are the disappearances and the trauma, which has to do with a story, rather from my own biography and collective,” bill.

To do this, he uses stories from his grandmother and mother. “On the one hand, the installation consists of a series of objects that I made from a childhood memory, which constitutes an amulet”, mentions. Her installation brings together pieces of women’s clothing, which together simulate a woman’s uterus and in the last piece she embodies the word on her legs: ‘When the sound of the sea stopped’.

Pacurucu says that the biennial works under a critical format. “In this sense, we invite artists to participate with works that we consider to have a clearly political, critical and rebellious tone and tint”holds.

“The idea of ​​nomadism is that, nomadism does not recognize limits, it does not recognize borders, it blurs them… it is also to bring together a group of people, passionate about art, without the need to determine or configure them as a nationality… ”, adds.

Other participating artists include Angie Bonino (Peru), Joaquin Sanchez (Paraguayan), Tomask Matuszak (Poland), Avelino Sala (Spain), anders ronnlund (Sweden), Gabriela Andrade (Ecuador), Anna Waligórska (Poland), Boris Ordonez (Ecuador), Olmedo Alvarado (Ecuador), among others.

The inauguration will be at 18:30 at the MAAC (Malecón and Loja), in its temporary exhibition halls. You can visit the exhibition until November 24, from Tuesday to Sunday, from 09:00 to 17:00. (YO)
