Attack on another work of art. German climate activists dump mashed potatoes on Monet’s ‘Les Meules’

Two activists at the Barberini museum in Potsdam in Germany covered Claude Monet’s painting ‘Les Meules’ with mashed potatoes before sticking it to the floor.

Protesters from the climate activist group ‘Letzte Generation’ (Last Generation) entered the museum on Sunday wearing high-visibility jackets before approaching the painting, which sold at auction for $110 million in 2019. The incident follows a series of similar demonstrations by activist groups across Europe.

At the moment it is not clear to what extent the element could have damaged Monet’s painting.

Protest at Abbey Road

The news comes as British Just Stop Oil protesters blocked the famous Abbey Road junction, in the same pose as The Beatles, while blocking traffic in London in their latest climate protest.

Members of the environmental group walked towards a crosswalk in north-west London at 1pm on Sunday, the Daily Mail reports, as they continue to cause chaos on the roads of the British capital. A video shows four protesters walking towards the crosswalk and striking the pose made famous by The Beatles on the cover of their Abbey Road album.

previous attacks

On October 14, two young supporters of the climate protest group Just Stop Oil Tossed Tomato Soup on Sunflowers by Dutch artist Vincent van Goghwork that is in room 43 of the National Gallery of London. The work was not damaged because it is protected by glass.

On October 9, two people attached their hands to Pablo Picasso’s painting “Massacre in Korea”, exhibited in Melbourne (Australia).

In all three cases the perpetrators were activists trying to draw attention to the climate crisis.

Also this year, on May 25, the painting of La Gioconda, one of the main claims of the Louvre museum in Paris, was attacked, at which a visitor threw a cake, although the work was not damaged when the cake hit the glass shield that protects oil for six decades. (YO)
