In the hands of the cast Prague Black Theater dreams seem to come alive in a special way. In the midst of the darkness, the fluorescent colors stand out with a unique magic that, at first glance, not only reveals objects flying on the stage, but also builds stories that at the time were born from the mind and heart of the authentic jiri srnec (1931-2021).

After 11 years, the company originally from the Czech Republic returns to Ecuador, with a show that brings together the best of its scenic repertoire of almost 60 years of experience. They will present two functions, one in Quito and another in Guayaquil.
In an interview with EL UNIVERSO, Jiri A. Srnecson of the founder of the theater, tells how excited they are to return to the country with a show that pays tribute to the memory of his father. “We already have a public that is waiting for us, so it is much better for us to return because the public knows what to expect from us. So we really want to be back in Ecuador”, declares the artist.

Under the name of The best of the Black Theater in Prague, the show brings together memorable scenes from his most renowned works such as The washerwoman, The suitcases, The photographer, The violinist, The prisoner, The magician, The horse, The fish, The taxi driver and The lanterns.
“They show how black theater has evolved…these sketches Everyone will like it, children, adults, grandmothers (…) this is the first tour after he (Jiri Srnec) passed away and we can say that it is a tribute to his work, to his life”says the Czech.

He does not advance details of the staging, because he says that it is a secret of the Black Theater in Prague. “The only thing I can say is that almost all the scenery needs fluorescent colors, the sounds are the originals recorded in analogue during all these years 1958-1961-1967, they have a lot of history”.
It highlights that it is the hands of the artists that give life to the objects on stage. We don’t use special effects. he proudly emphasizes. The cast of this show is made up of two technicians and seven artists, including dancers, actors and mimes.
In 2011, Srnec told this newspaper that his mission was for the company to be recognized for its quality, something that he admits to having achieved so far. “We want to be recognized for our quality (…) what makes the Black Theater in Prague take so many years and why promoters from different countries continue to invite us is because my dad did something that was very creative, the stories we deal with are true , what makes this theater special, not so much the technique”, points.

His father and founder of the company, Jiri Srnec, passed away on November 28, 2021, when he was 90 years old. He was a director, composer, actor and set designer who revolutionized the Czechoslovak theater, targeting the imagination through the Chinese technique of the camera obscura. “Fantasy is one of the greatest riches of the human being”, said the man, who, when he was in his old age, began to direct tours from a distance.
“My dad was like a theater soul who was present all the time,” declares to this newspaper, the heir of the company and responsible for the theater for about fifteen years.
Mónica Ojeda for her nomination at the 2022 National Book Awards: Being among the five finalists in the translated book category is important to me and a reason for celebration
“My dad had a creative soul that did not stop, he was creating all the time and he had many topics that he wanted to discuss… I don’t have that much, for me the important thing is to have good quality on stage, to have happy people, professional actors, So now I’m looking for a director -a new soul- who can carry something similar to my dad ”, confesses the artist who continues his father’s legacy.

Since its creation, they have traveled with their shows to more than 60 countries in the world, trips that they consider special for cultural exchange. “This type of theater, where we don’t use words, allows this, to travel all over the world. And for us it is interesting to discover the different reactions of people. In Japan it is a very silent public during the whole show, but after that it is a big applause that lasts many minutes. In Ecuador and in Latin America it is a very cordial audience… it is an audience that we feel, that is sharing a function, that is also creating a function with us”, describes.
What’s more, there are countries in which they have had to adapt the assembly, due to the way of life of the place. He says that in Arabia they could not show the scenes where the characters drink alcohol, for example.
