Eirini Agapidaki meets Athos governor over health centre

Greek Alternate Minister of Health Eirini Agapidaki has met Mount Athos Civil Governor Alkiviadis Stefanis to boost staffing and equipment at Karyes Health Centre.

The working meeting focused on securing the smooth operation of the clinic, which serves as the principal primary healthcare facility for resident monks and visitors across the monastic peninsula.

Discussions placed particular emphasis on addressing staffing shortages and supplying essential medical technology equipment. Both officials aimed to ensure that the healthcare structure can respond effectively to local medical demands.

Agapidaki and Stefanis confirmed that their offices will maintain close cooperation on regional healthcare issues, making the upgrade of personnel and diagnostic equipment at Karyes their shared priority.

The Greek state described the initiative as part of its ongoing duty to meet the health requirements of the Athonite community while respecting the special traditions and monastic character of the territory.

Primary care at Karyes Health Centre

The Karyes Health Centre operates as the frontline medical clinic for Mount Athos, providing primary care, emergency triage, and basic outpatient treatment. Because the peninsula has no general hospital of its own, local doctors manage immediate illnesses and injuries on site before transferring severe cases to mainland hospitals in Central Macedonia.

The settlement of Karyes serves as the administrative centre of the monastic territory. It hosts the Holy Community, the central governing assembly made up of representatives from the twenty sovereign Eastern Orthodox monasteries that govern life on the peninsula.

Medical services in the area must support thousands of individuals under unusual logistical conditions. Alongside hundreds of resident Orthodox monks, large numbers of male pilgrims travel to Mount Athos each year, requiring steady access to medical supplies and professional clinical care in remote settlements.

Governance of Mount Athos

Mount Athos is an autonomous monastic state located on the easternmost prong of the Chalkidiki peninsula in northern Greece. While spiritual authority rests with the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, the Greek government retains responsibility for public order, security, customs, and public health across the territory.

The Greek state exercises its authority through an appointed civil governor based in Karyes. Stefanis, a retired army general and former Chief of the Hellenic Army General Staff, took up the governorship to oversee state services on the peninsula following earlier ministerial roles in national defence.

Cooperation between the civil governor and the central government in Athens is vital for funding public services. Because Mount Athos operates under special constitutional protections that limit standard commercial activities, public facilities rely directly on government allocations and specialised agreements with state ministries.

Healthcare support from Athens

Agapidaki oversees primary healthcare and public health programmes within the Greek Ministry of Health. Her remit includes reforming rural health centres and upgrading medical infrastructure across remote and isolated communities throughout Greece.

The remote geography of the Athos peninsula presents distinct challenges for public health officials. Many monasteries and hermitages are accessible only by dirt tracks, footpaths, or coastal boats, making the central clinic at Karyes an indispensable base for urgent care.

Agapidaki and Stefanis concluded their talks by confirming that close cooperation between the health ministry and the civil administration will continue, keeping the staffing and equipment needs of the Karyes clinic at the top of their joint agenda.
