Retail retail sales grew 20% in February and exceeded S/ 3,600 million

The Minister of Production, Jorge Luis Prado Palomino, reported that Sales of the retail retail sector reached S/ 3,613 million in February 2022, which represented an advance of 20% compared to the same month last year. “This result responds, mainly, to the increase in the turnover of supermarkets and hypermarkets, department stores, bookstores and stationery; in addition to hardware and finishing stores, ”he indicated.

Regarding the number of jobs, the head of Produce said that retail trade generated more than 112,626 jobs. Of the total, 49% were for women.

Meanwhile, permanent personnel represented 78.8% of the total employment generated by this segment. He also highlighted that the number of stores in the retail sector went from 4,370 in February 2021 to 4,595 until February 2022, which meant an increase of 5.1%.

How much the subsectors grew in sales

Supermarket and hypermarket sales reached S/ 1,519 million last February, a figure that meant an increase of 7.2%, due to the greater demand for food (+4.8%), diverse products (+1.7% ) and clothing (+6.1%), according to data from the General Office of Impact Assessment and Economic Studies of Produce.

While, department store sales grew 67.8% due to the increase in placements of clothing and footwear (+123.8%), as well as furniture (+3.7%).

Similarly, the growth of sales of hardware stores and finishes was 33.7%, due to purchases of household items (+81.8%), furniture (+56.2%) and hardware items (+31, one%). All this driven by self-construction works.

Lastly, the pharmacies and drugstores subsector grew by 5.3%, in response to higher sales of pharmaceutical and medicinal products (+14.6%). However, it was mitigated by the decrease in sales of personal care products (-27.7%).
