The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) began the execution of the V National Economic Census 2022, which had not been carried out for 14 years (2008). This in order to have updated information on companies that produce goods and services, and to know the impact of the pandemic on the country’s business structure.
The boss of INEI, Dante Carhuavilcaestimated that 2 million businesses – between formal and informal – will be registered from the fishing, agriculture, manufacturing, electricity, gas, construction, accommodation, food, transportation, communications, real estate, private education, water, vehicle repair, financial and insurance, and entertainment sectors, among others.
With the results of the economic census, which will be known between January-February 2023, economic information will be available for the change of the base year and estimate the drop in employment levels, the new ways of executing work (face-to-face or remote), in addition to knowing how the marketing channels and the intensive use of ICT have been modified.
For its part, Rolando Ocampodirector of the Statistics Division of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), stated that the entity’s recommendation is that the economic census be carried out every 5 to 10 years.
However, he indicated that the ideal is not to carry out any more censuses, “and rather to have an excellent administrative system.” “Several European countries stopped doing censuses because they have the administrative resources. From ECLAC we encourage Latin America to have all the updated information for statistical purposes”, Ocampo concluded.
