Barkala affirms that the situation in the Port of Bilbao is difficult, but rules out collapse

The president of the Port Authority of Bilbao has assured that the Port works “one hundred percent” and that he does not contemplate reducing the arrival of ships.

The president of the Port Authority of Bilbao, Ricardo Barkala, stated this Monday that the situation in the Port of Bilbao is difficult, that it works “one hundred percent” and that there is no risk of collapse or of fewer ships arriving.

Barkala made these statements in the presentation of a project to convert the Port of Bilbao into a hub for clean energy and services and reduce the carbon footprint of port activity.

Barkala explained that with the carriers’ strike, dry cargo does not leave the port, which is accumulating on the docks, while the oil product tanks are working at more than 50% and the railway is operating normally.

He has pointed out that there is no risk of collapse because the capacity of the docks to store containers quadruples normal operations (it can reach 2 million TEUs).

In the case of the railway, in Bilbao it normally takes care of 25% of the loads (more than in other ports) and Barkala has recognized that it is also being used to supply some industries in a critical situation due to the lack of raw materials.

Barkala, who has asked that the right to work be respected in the same way as the right to strike, has pointed out that he does not contemplate reducing the arrival of ships because the truckers’ strike affects all of Spain and there are no other alternatives to deliver or remove goods.
