The fishermen will decide tomorrow whether to go out to sea again, after a week in port

According to Eugenio Elduaien, president of the Gipuzkoa Fishermen’s Guilds, in an interview with Euskadi Irratia, he suspects that the strike is going to take a long time, since “fuel prices make the situation unfeasible”. “We need help as soon as possible,” he said.

The fuel crisis and the transporters’ strike have left the fishing sector in an unstable situation. The arantzales have been since last Monday without going to sea, and tomorrow they will decide about how to act from now on. For its part, the National Federation of Fishermen’s Guilds will decide at a meeting scheduled for Wednesday. The fishermen of Hegoalde are not part of said federation, but they coincide in their demands: the price of diesel makes it unfeasible to go to sea.

Eugenio Elduaien, president of the Gipuzkoa Fishermen’s Guilds, was interviewed this Saturday in Euskadi Irratia and, as he has stated, the situation “could go on for a long time”, which is why he has asked for help to arrive “sooner”.

“It is now that we need the aid, and not in the long term, we don’t care where it comes from. The French have acted very quickly, and I don’t understand why Spain doesn’t do it faster.”

As he explains, gasoline “not feasible” at its current price, and many companies “run the risk of reeling from these fuel prices”.

Elduaien believes that the situation “goes a long way”: “we will decide tomorrow, but given what is happening at the state level, there is a lot of concern.”
