How do tires influence fuel economy when traveling?

On March 12, super gasoline rose by $0.60 or 17%. And due to the system of monthly increases that has been in operation in Ecuador since May 2020 due to the band system, it will continue to rise and could exceed $4 per gallon as a result of the escalation in international oil prices due to the armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Most vehicles require gasoline to run. There are several doubts regarding what type of gasoline should be used, whether it is extra, ecopaís (extra with Anhydrous Ethanol) or super.

To determine the type of gasoline that should be used, it is necessary to determine the compression ratio of the automobile engine, this means that the volume ratio within each of the engine cylinders and its ability to compress the mixture must be known.

The new increase in the price of super gasoline entails more expenses for the family pocket. Although one of the options to save is switch to a cheaper type of gasolinefor high-end vehicles this is not a viable optionAs it can affect its performance and cause mechanical damage to some components.

“Tires play an important role in fuel consumption, since depending on various factors of the tire can consume more or less gasoline. That is why it is important to keep these aspects in mind to save and consume what is necessary, contributing to personal and family finances. Tires with the correct or close to correct pressure, with adequate tread, correct weight and measurements, can generate savings of up to 10% in a month in gasoline consumption”, explained Carlos Cruz, Commercial Manager of Hankook Tire.

On the factors of tires to consume gasoline efficiently:

Check tire pressure and keep it at the correct inflation:

A tire with low pressure generates higher fuel consumption, since it decreases the response capacity in braking, by reducing the grip of the tire on the surface. “This causes greater effort of the vehicle, consuming up to 30% more gasoline of what is necessary,” says the Hankook Tire executive.

Regularly balance and align tires:

The lack of balance and alignment of the wheels produce irregular wear of the same, requiring more power from the vehicle to move, which generates greater fuel consumption.

Check the resistance level of the tread:

The resistance of the tread has to do with the relationship between the energy used by the vehicle during its movement and the external factors that hinder movement.

Check the structure of the tire and the allowable load limit:

The lighter a vehicle is, the less effort it requires to move, which results in lower fuel consumption.

Be careful with the measurement:

Tire size also influences gas mileage. Generally, for aesthetic reasons, tires with greater width and height are placed, measures that are not in accordance with the technical specifications required by a certain vehicle. (I)
