The Executive Power promulgated, today, Saturday, February 26, the repeal of the Law of Compulsory Insurance for Artisanal Fishermen (SOPA)which was approved at the beginning of February by the Congress of the Republic, by a large majority.
Part of the support for the repeal of Law 30636 is that it generates an additional cost to the fishermen, who rejected it when a first version of the regulation was published. The regulation process also presented difficulties because it became clear that it was necessary to create an electronic system for shipping, monitored by the General Directorate of Captaincies and Coast Guards (DICAPI).
On the other hand, insurance companies showed no interest in offering such insurance, since the beneficiary population is small, since according to the survey there would be a maximum of 17,000 boats at the national level that require this protection.
Likewise, the fishermen’s unions expressed their rejection of the law because of its mandatory nature, in addition to the fact that they already have regular EsSalud insurance, thanks to the Law No. 27177 and its regulations, Supreme Decree No. 002-2002-TR, which incorporates them as regular members.
The repeal document has the signature of President Pedro Castillo and the President of the Council of Ministers, AnĂbal Torres.
