The voluntary affiliation to the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security (IESS) It is a modality that can be used by people over 18 years of age who live in Ecuador or abroad and who do not exercise economic activity in the country, that is, who are not working.
The affiliation request is made from the IESS website.
This affiliation starts from the first day of the month in which the corresponding request is made. the affiliate you can present your exit notice at any timebeing able to reactivate your affiliation through a new request.
The value of the contribution to the IESS will correspond to 17.60% of the taxable matter or contribution base, that is, the monthly value that the affiliate establishes as equivalent to his remuneration.
This taxable matter may be increased or decreased at any time by the member, but in no case may it be less than the Unified Basic Salary (SBU) in force in Ecuador, which for this 2022 is 425 dollars.
The affiliate will cancel the monthly contributions within 15 days after the month in which the payment of contributions corresponds.
Contribution payments can be made through automatic debit to an account of the Ecuadorian financial system. You can also cancel at windows of the Bolivariano, Guayaquil, Austro, Pacífico, Produbanco banks, as well as in Servipagos, Western Union and Cooperativa El Sagrario.
If the payment of contributions is not registered within 30 days after the corresponding month, the IESS will eliminate the proof of payment and will not generate more forms. In that case, the affiliate will be able to access the affiliation again.

- Enter the web portal www.iess.gob.ec.
- Select the menu Independent People / People without a Dependency Relationship / Online Services / Request Affiliation, or click here.
- Register your ID number; year, month and day of birth (YYYY/MM/DD).
- Click on continue, since there is a validation of requirements (being over 18 years of age and not registering arrears or pending obligations with the IESS).
- Verify your personal data displayed on the screen.
- Select the affiliation regime: Affiliation without Dependency Relationship.
- Complete your data: province, canton, parish, address, email, telephone number and cell phone number. They are marked with an asterisk

- Enter the contribution base you want.
- In the upper part of the window and for your information, the minimum contribution base of USD$425 is displayed – corresponding to the SBU in force in Ecuador for 2022-; as well as the contribution percentage (17.60%)
- In this step it is also possible to extend the health coverage for your spouse/common-law partner, accepting an additional monthly contribution of 3.41%. This registration is validated through the citizenship card number of your spouse or partner.
- You can calculate your monthly contribution and modify the contribution base as you deem convenient, but it cannot be less than the indicated minimum.
- Confirm your registration details. These include the contribution base, the monthly contribution amount, the coverage extension contribution, and the monthly payment. You must read and accept the conditions and finally approve your request.
- Accept the registration confirmation, in which the contribution base, contribution by extension of coverage and monthly payment is corroborated.
- View the confirmation that your affiliation has been accepted and continue the process.
Print the document: Request for Voluntary Affiliation without Dependency Relationship. Additionally, in this step, you are suggested to obtain your personal password. In the event that you already have a personal password, you can directly access the Affiliate System, where you will find an option to register your bank account data, in order to authorize the automatic debit of your contributions.
Residents abroad who are Ecuadorians of legal age, regardless of their occupation or economic activity, who voluntarily join this regime, can also join as volunteers. (I)
