Peru surpasses Chile and becomes the world’s leading exporter of grapes

The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) reported that the Peru positioned itself in 2021 as the world’s leading exporter of fresh grapes, the main product of the national agro-export basket. Thus, during the past year, Peruvian grape exports reached US$ 1,260 million, which represents a growth of 22% compared to 2020.

In this way, Peru surpasses Chile (US$ 928 million) as the main supplier of grapes in the world. Positions 3 and 4 also include the United States ($782 million) and China ($757 million).

“The achievements made in exports in 2021 are a clear example of the resilience of exporters and the growth potential of our products. From Mincetur, we will continue to promote their shipments through capacity building, trade promotion and access to new markets,” said the head of the sector, Roberto Sánchez.

As it is recalled, in the coastal regions, the grape is the main agricultural export product, representing 17% of the shipments of this productive sector. Ica and Piura lead the exports of this fruit and they register shipments for US$ 605 million (+32%) and US$ 488 million (+10%) respectively. These regions concentrate 87% of the country’s grape exports.

Other regions that sold grapes abroad were Lambayeque, with US$71 million (+21%); La Libertad, with US$67 million (+45%), and Arequipa, with US$19 million (+1%).

The main destination markets for grape shipments are United States (US$514 million), European Union (US$239 million), Hong Kong (US$128 million), United Kingdom (US$68 million), Mexico (US$54 million), China (US$44 million) and South Korea ($43 million).

In 2021, 149 Peruvian companies have shipped grapes abroad. Of these, 38% were micro, small and medium enterprises.
