Rural Agriculture estimated that this year approximately 40,000 tons of guano will be extracted and processed from the islands, a valuable natural resource that is used to fertilize the crops of small and medium-sized agricultural producers in our country and thus increase agricultural production.
According to Agronoticias, the calculation was made based on the latest population census of the species that inhabit the 22 islands and eight guano points that Agro Rural has under its administration on the Peruvian coast, with special emphasis on the number of the three main guano species : the guanay, the booby and the pelican.
On the other hand, according to the study of the Fertilizer Extraction and Commercialization Sub-Unit, the largest number of guano species was concentrated on Isla Chincha Centro, located in the Ica region, with a total of 472,075 guano birds, of which 135,578 are Guanays and 336,497 are Piqueros.
In second place is the North Guañape Island of the La Libertad region with a record of 372,843 guano birds, of which 187,389 are Guanays, 184,267 are Boobies and 1,187 with Pelicans and in third place, Macabí Island, also in La Libertad with 305,125 guano birds, of which 231,906 are Guanays, 63,674 are Boobies and 9,545 are Pelicans.
Thanks to this calculation, the professionals of Agro Rural can carry out the planning of the campaigns for the use of guano from the islands on these three islands.
It should be noted that the Chincha Norte, Centro and Sur islands are very important since they have historical significance: they were the main providers of the natural resource during the guano heyday of Peru (1845-1866).
