Arequipa: merchants reject speculation on prices of school supplies

Arequipa. Before the next return to face-to-face classes, some merchants have begun to speculate about a possible increase in the price of school supplies. In some cases, city bookstores have already considerably raised the cost of the products in the school basket.

The merchants of the Los Reyes Fair, located on the south side of the Melgar Stadium, rejected this increase and guaranteed that they they will continue to offer their products at the same value they had before the pandemic of COVID-19.

ā€œUnfortunately, there are some merchants who, taking advantage of the fact that the children are going back to school, have begun to increase the price of their products. We reject this action and assure our public that we will continue to offer products at affordable pricesā€, said John Coaquira, president of this fair.

In a comparison made by La RepĆŗblica with other stores located in the streets of the Cercado, the stands of the aforementioned fair offered cheaper prices. A Standford brand A4 notebook, for example, it is sold at S/ 5.50 in the bookstores of the San Camilo market, while in the Melgar stadium fair it is S/ 4.00.

This and other slight increases were also evident in other basic products, such as colored boxes, markers, plasticine, temperas, among others. The difference varies between S/ 0.50 to S/ 2.00.

At the Los Reyes Fair there are 20 bookstores that will serve the public from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm until next March 30. Coaquira estimated that they offer 80 direct jobs and more than 100 indirect jobs. ā€œIn the 2020 campaign, many of us went bankrupt because, as soon as classes started, the pandemic began. Last year we sold a little at least to recover the capital lost from the previous year. This year we leave with the best expectationā€, he concluded.
