The Organization of American States (OAS) approved the declaration “Oil spills in the Ventanilla Sea and solidarity with the People and Government of Peru”, during the extraordinary session of its Permanent Council organized today, February 9, 2022.
In the document, the organization led by Louis Almagro expresses its “dismay” at the “serious consequences” for the environment, economics, society and life and the populations affected by the oil spill that occurred on January 15 at the hands of the Repsol company at the La Pampilla Refinery.
“The OAS calls for an urgent evaluation and investigation of this incident with the support of regional and international institutions,” the statement said.
Likewise, it expresses its “firm support” for the efforts undertaken by the Government of Peru to guarantee that those responsible for the incident “comply with remedying the damage caused”, and extends a called on financial and development institutions to “provide emergency humanitarian aid.”
In addition, the OAS sends the declaration, through its Secretary General, to the different competent international institutions, so that they promote all the necessary measures to mobilize their response in an “urgent” manner.
The special session of the Permanent Council was attended by Miriam Alegria ZevallosPresident of the Board of Directors of the Agency for Environmental Assessment and Enforcement (OEFA), and the Ambassador of Peru to the OAS, Harold Forsyth.
“As the vast majority of member states are coastal countries -and those that are not, can also suffer collateral incidents- this is an extremely important issue for our organization,” Forsyth said.
