Environmental community monitoring by Acción Ecológica detects repeated minor spills in Amazon oil fields

In just one month, minor spills have been generated in oil fields due to broken pipes and other technical problems.

The environmental and community monitoring system of Acción Ecológica has identified at least five oil spills in a month in the Amazon. The problems have been generated in several oil fields and reported by the community itself. This was commented by Alexandra Almeida, responsible for oil issues in the environmental organization.

On December 24, a spill was reported in Kofán Dureno territory, in the Lago Agrio canton, presumably due to the overflow of a tank. The problem generated the contamination of a ravine and a swamp.

On January 2, another spill was reported, this time in the Shushufindi canton, due to the rupture of a minor pipe. On this occasion, an area within the Limoncocha Biological Reserve was contaminated.

A third event was the spill that occurred in the pre-cooperative 11 de Julio (Kilindaña Shushufindi sector). Likewise, the cause of the problem that occurred on January 5 would have been the rupture of the pipe. On this occasion, a spring and an unnamed estuary were contaminated.

Almeida also commented that on January 8 another spill was reported in the Río Doch community, located in the Cobra Shushufindi field. The cause would have been an explosion of the pressure gauge cover. That caused the contamination of a swamp.

In just one month, a second spill occurred in Limoncocha, also due to a broken pipe. The event, which contaminated a spring, an unnamed estuary and the Jivino River, took place on January 26, 2022.

The NGO monitors this type of environmental mishaps. Over the weekend, some of its technicians were sent to the Piedra Fina sector, in Napo, where a recent crude oil spill occurred after the rupture of the Heavy Crude Oil Pipeline (OCP). (I)
