The President of the Agency for Environmental Assessment and Enforcement (OEFA), Miriam Joy, revealed that the La Pampilla refinery, managed by Grupo Repsol del Perú S.AC., reported that the extensive oil spill in Ventanilla it was “0.16 barrels of hydrocarbon” and that only through other platforms was it discovered that the damage was much greater than that provided by the company.
“On January 15, at 10:06 p.m., we received the emergency report from the La Pampilla refinery, informing us of the presence of an oily product in an area of approximately 2.5 m². They point out to us that it is due to the occurrence of a spill of 0.16 barrels of hydrocarbon, that for this reason they suspend the discharge of crude oil and deploy containment actions, ”said the official in dialogue with RPP.
However, despite receiving this report, personnel went to verify the situation, since on Sunday the 16th they observed, through social networks, that the oil had reached the adjoining beaches.
“This is how their report was understood and the next day we found out that the spill was scattered all over the adjoining beaches, obviously it was not a small situation. We found out through the news and social networks, we went out to verify and pre-militarily identified that the affected area would be 18,000 m², which is quite extensive,” he added.
In this sense, the OEFA specified that the company has two days to recognize which areas have been affected by the displacement of oil and 10 days to clean up the soil. Added to this, he pointed out that he has five days to recover the crude oil that floats in the sea.
