Anne Frank is a Jewish girl who lived with her family in Germany. However, when the Nazis came to power, she was in hiding in the Netherlands. Unfortunately, in 1944 the family was denounced. All of them were sent to a concentration camp. In it, the girl stayed for a year. At the age of 16, she died of typhus. She wrote her diary throughout her stay in the camp.

A retired FBI agent conducted an investigation for six years to discover the identity of the person who had betrayed Anne Frank and given her location to the Nazis. A team of historians collaborated with him. According to investigators, they recently managed to identify the main suspect. During the work, among others, modern algorithms were used to find connections between a teenager’s family and different people.

According to experts conducting the investigation, the family was betrayed by a member of the Jewish Council in Amsterdam – Van den Bergh. The organ in which the man acted dealt with the implementation of Nazi policy in the Jewish community.

“He had to provide the Nazis with something valuable”

According to the researchers, Van den Bergh was not sent to the camp. It probably happened because the man was passing information to the Nazis. “After Van den Bergh lost all the safeguards that would exempt him from having to be sent back to the camp, he had to provide the Nazis with something valuable to keep him and his wife safe,” former FBI agent Vince Pankoke told CBS 60 Minutes.

Van den Bergh died in 1950. Researchers recall that he was a Jew. So the man was probably left in a hopeless situation. So he had to do something to save his life.
