Majes Siguas II stalled due to mismanagement of the Regional Government of Arequipa, according to Midagri

The possible reactivation or cancellation of the Majes Siguas II project still holds in suspense a possible resolution of the contract that would drag a demand for US$ 220 million by the Cobra company. In this regard, the Minister of Agrarian Development and Irrigation, Víctor Maita, explained to RPP that there was a “stagnation” that would be the responsibility of the regional authorities in Arequipa.

Maita stressed that the megaproject is in charge of the Regional Government of Arequipa and not Midagri.

“The owner of this project is GORE Arequipa, not Midagri, and the concessionaire is the Cobra company. Addendum 13 has been developed and the MEF and Proinversión have given it viability, but its approval is in the hands of the Regional Government and its Regional Council. The GORE, the councilors and the population of Arequipa request that the distribution of the land be also for small farmers. That is why this approval of addendum 13 of Majes Siguas II has stalled”, he said.

Likewise, the head of Agriculture said that the concessionaire requests the approval of addendum 13 since they request the modification of the technology to conduct irrigation water. For Maita, the application of these changes is necessary.

“Initially they proposed that it would be through an open flow, but due to the increase in the ecological flow, it is better to take the water by pipe. Obviously this requires a larger budget, “he stressed to said medium.
