“We will take to the streets to value the achievements made and claim our rights”

María Serrano Mitxelena, spokesperson for the Alderdi Eder Pensioners’ Movement, stressed that today’s protests will also serve to denounce the “collapse” that the sixth wave of the pandemic has brought to public services.

On the fourth anniversary of the beginning of his mobilizations, the Euskal Herria Pensioners Movement will again today take to the streets of numerous towns and cities to demand decent pensions and quality public services. “Fundamentally we are going to value the achievements made and we are going to emphasize those demands that are central, such as minimum pensions of 1,080 euros,” he said. Maria Serrano Mitxelena one of the spokespersons for the Alderdi Eder Pensioners’ Movement.

Likewise, the demonstrations will also serve to denounce the “collapse” that the sixth wave of the pandemic of the covid-19 has meant for public health services. In the opinion of the group of pensioners, “the latest wave of the pandemic has only accentuated the problems that come from afar in residences, Primary Care and hospitals.” In this sense, Serrano wanted to denounce “the enormous discrimination” suffered by a large sector of pensioners who do not have access to digital platforms. “Forms through the Internet, previous appointments, collapsed telephones… for many it is impossible to access Primary Care through these channels”, he pointed out.

On the other hand, they will also show their disagreement with respect to several aspects that the Government of Spain intends to include in the labor reform. Serrano has considered that it is a “very limited reform” whose content “will have a direct impact on future pensions.” On the other hand, he has underlined that with the increases in the CPI and pensions announced for this year, their purchasing power will be reduced by 3%.

The Euskal Herria Pensioners’ Movement faces this 2022 with “great strength” and ensures that they will continue on the streets until they achieve their goals. However, Serrano acknowledges that after four years of protests it is time to “think and discuss the dynamics that we are going to follow.”

The protests will take place from 12:00 noon in Vitoria-Gasteiz (Post Office Square), Donostia-San Sebastian (Beautiful side), Bilbao (Grand Via) and Pamplona (Plaza del Baluarte), as well as in towns such as Eibar, Ondarroa, Tafalla, Alsasua and Estella.
