The Private Investment Promotion Agency (ProInversión) reported that the concessionaire company Salaverry Terminal Internacional SA signed the accreditation act to invest in the construction of a new Solid Bulk Storage Area – Anthracite Park at the Salaverry Multipurpose Port Terminal (Trujillo, La Libertad).
This discretionary investment proposed by the port operator amounts to US$10,941,000 and will allow for an increase in the export capacity of anthracite coal extracted from mines located in the regions of La Libertad and Ancash.
The expansion will also enable improvements in the operations of the Salaverry port terminal, by providing an area specifically dedicated to the storage of anthracite, a top-grade mineral coal.
According to data from the port concessionaire, in 2023 the total cargo moved through this port was 3.19 million tons of solid bulk, representing 97.59% of its total capacity.
“It should be noted that anthracite coal traffic reached more than 42.5% of the solid bulk transported,” said the agency attached to the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF).
As we recall, in 2018 ProInversión awarded the project “Modernization and Development of the Salaverry Multipurpose Port Terminal”, with an estimated investment of US$228 million.
With this new investment, the Salaverry Port Terminal is preparing for a future of growth and efficiency, contributing significantly to the country’s economic development.
“The modernization of the Salaverry port has been a radical change for the country’s trade and competitiveness, as we have seen when we have made technical visits to the port terminal. And now, with this investment to expand storage capacity, a milestone is marked in the development of the La Libertad region,” said José Salardi, executive director of ProInversión.
Salaverry and an extension for non-metallic mining
The storage expansion project at the Salaverry Port Terminal includes the implementation in the backup area and/or development of a new infrastructure for the storage of anthracite coal of approximately 8 hectares in size to carry out reception, storage, screening, and dispatch to the dock of anthracite coal, which will be received from trucks coming from the different exploitation centers in the area of influence of the aforementioned port (La Libertad and Ancash).
The infrastructure development also includes the construction of paved and signposted access roads approximately 1,350 m long to allow for optimal vehicular traffic flow; these are projected as an extension of the existing roads and will serve to access the storage area.
The data
- The physical works will begin next August and the start of operations of the new infrastructure is scheduled for the first quarter of 2025, said Diego Cassinelli, general manager of STI.
- The La Libertad region, located in northern Peru, has become an epicentre for coal exports, with the port of Salaverry as a key point for this trade.
- However, a report from the Regional Government of La Libertad reveals that approximately 73% of the 30,000 tons of coal exported monthly from this port come from illegal mining, which represents a major challenge for the authorities.
