In the rolling quarter of April, May and June of this year, the population with adequate employment reached 3,151,300 Peruvians, thus representing 53.9% of the total economically active population in Metropolitan Lima, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI).
Along those lines, The population with adequate employment increased by 5% (149,800) compared to the same period in 2023. Meanwhile, compared to the moving quarter of April, May and June 2019, there was no significant variation, with only 500 more Peruvians joining the formal market.
The National Permanent Employment Survey (EPEN) also highlights that in the quarter studied, the underemployed population increased by 4.3% (95,900), with the group of those underemployed due to insufficient working hours increasing by 28.7% (124,500) over the same period last year; while the number of those underemployed due to income decreased by 1.6% (28,600).
On the other hand, when comparing the results of underemployment with the pre-pandemic figures, there is evidence of a decrease of 11.4% (71,600) in underemployment due to insufficient hours or visible underemployment. Meanwhile, underemployment due to income – or invisible – grew significantly by 56.9%; that is, 635,300 more Peruvians with precarious salaries.
In this regard, it is noted that while the trend in terms of the population of employed Peruvians since the abysmal fall in the pandemic has shown slow but sustained growth, underemployment rates have also been growing. In fact, It should be remembered that adequate employment only began to grow in the moving quarter of January, February and March of this year compared to the figures for 2019 (+3.1%).but this also increases the population of Peruvians in the informal market, without benefits and with precarious salaries.

In the period of analysis, An increase of 7.2% was identified in the female population with adequate employment. That is, 80,000 more women have entered the formal labour market compared to the same period in 2023, bringing the total to 1,191,400.
Meanwhile, although the male population registered a smaller growth of 3.7% (69,800) compared to the same period last year, there are a total of 1,959,900 men currently working in the formal market, thus marking a gap of 768,500 positions in suitable employment. That is, there is a difference of 60.79%.
Compared to the same quarter in 2019, it was noted that women with adequate employment increased by 4.8% (54,100); while men decreased by 2.7% (-53,500). Thus, in general terms, adults over 45 years of age reported a greater participation in the market. According to the latest study, 73,900 more Peruvians joined this group, representing an increase of 6.7%.
On the other hand, compared to the same period in 2023, the 25 to 44 age group grew by 4.6% (75,000) and the 14 to 24 age group by 0.3% (800). While in the pre-pandemic scenario, only those over 45 years of age reported an increase (+26.3%). Meanwhile, the 14 to 24 age group decreased by 29.3% and the 25 to 44 age group by 7.4%.
