This series has everything I hate, and I still fell for it. With other premieres, it’s easy to miss

The Bridgerton-esque costumes, the bitter family conflicts, the Succession-like scum and the Shrek-esque plot – believe it or not, it’s the perfect combination to put me off any kind of viewing. And although you’ll find all of these elements in the series My Lady Jane, I fell in love with it from the first minute.

“My Lady Jane” creates an alternative history of England, in which King Henry VIII’s son, Edward, does not die of tuberculosis, and Lady Jane Grey and her husband Guildford are not hanged. Instead, due to a series of events, a young girl ascends the throne. The series available on Amazon Prime Video could have escaped many potential viewers, because it had huge competition in the month of its premiere. In June, in addition to “My Lady Jane”, the new season of “Blood of the Dragon”, “The Boys” and the debut of “Acolyte” from the Star Wars universe appeared on streaming. However, with the series based on the novels by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows, none of the previously mentioned have a chance with me.

You may not have heard of this series. “My Lady Jane” delights from the first minute

“My Lady Jane” delights with its lightness, humor and distance. It is a story full of predictable plot twists, which are not intended to surprise the viewer at all, but to give them self-aware entertainment. The fairy tale climate favors a simple message here, which, as befits a decent fairy tale, proves to us that goodness, loyalty, friendship and love always win. There are sparks between the characters, even the stupidest dialogues are funny, and in the second episode the viewer will experience the strangest plot twist of recent years.

The title character fits perfectly into the feminist message of the production. The rebellious, intelligent and independent Jane Grey has everything that Lady Belle Fox from the series “Smart Guy”, which also premiered this year, lacked. This is a production set in the universe of Charles Dickens’ novel “Oliver Twist”, introducing viewers to the character of Jack Dawkins. Both girls, whom we meet in costume series telling stories from previous eras, do not fit into their times. They are fascinated by the secrets of medicine, prefer books to men and have extraordinary reserves of determination to live their own way, despite everything and everyone. However, Lady Belle is haughty and dry for most of the series and brings to mind Hermione Granger, who was irritating in the first parts of Harry Potter, while Jane Gray charms the viewer with the perfect balance between ambition, intelligence, defiance, and care for loved ones and the warmth she spreads whenever she appears on screen.

“My Lady Jane” is entertaining and touching. It is a series that surprises with its lightness and distance.

The characters and their relationships are some of the strongest points of “My Lady Jane”. The sight of Mary makes you want to throw tomatoes at the screen, Guildford Dudley will provide both male and female viewers with many deep sighs, Lord Seymour groans of embarrassment, and King Edward will provide a friendly eye-roll. Although the characters here are quite clichéd and predictable, the viewer is overwhelmed by their charm, sincerity and carefree naivety. Here, you root for the “good guys” with bated breath, and wish the worst tortures on the bad guys. The whole thing is complemented by a narrator who, like a narrator from popular bikini reality shows, makes fun of the absurdities of the era, the characters’ stumbles and the series itself, which is not only a brilliant meta commentary, but also justifies all the series’ awkwardness and adds contrast to the story in a unique way.

And these contrasts are another strength of “My Lady Jane”. Characters set in the Tudor dynasty curse, show each other the middle fingers and use words they had no right to know. The whole thing is complemented by a phenomenal soundtrack full of rock covers that deliberately, in an exaggerated way, fit in with the plot, like in the tackiest music videos.

“My Lady Jane” is a costume romantic comedy with fantasy elements. And it is a true romcom, which, one by one, with encyclopedic precision, ticks off the next classic elements of the genre. We have two characters who are seemingly divided by everything. Although they do not like each other – they have to work together. Along the way and through numerous (funny!) adventures, the characters fall in love (of course!), but their feelings (you won’t believe it!) encounter a lot of difficulties, which they overcome together (can you guess?) so that at the end credits every viewer sheds a tear of emotion or at least becomes emotional. However, thanks to the non-obvious form, even such obvious entertainment will bring joy to the biggest malcontents.
