Citizens from Chile and the United States led the growth of inbound tourism in our country. Cusco, Lima, Arequipa and Ica were the departments with the highest number of visitors.
According to the latest report from the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), the first five months of the year totaled 1,290,087 international tourists, representing a growth of 52.8% compared to the same period in 2023, with an additional flow of 446,000 foreigners. Although these are encouraging figures, pre-pandemic levels have not yet been recovered; we are at 71% of the tourists registered in the same period in 2019.
The growth of inbound tourism was influenced by people coming mainly from Chile (309,000) with a 23.9% share of the total, the United States (234,000) representing 18.2%, Ecuador (11,000), being 8.6% of the universe, Bolivia (74,000), representing 5.8%, Brazil (69,000) and Colombia (65,000), translating into 5.4% and 5% respectively.
The entry of international tourists took place through the Jorge Chávez International Airport, with a total of 815,000 tourists (63.2% of the total), as well as the different border control posts. The Santa Rosa Border Control Post in Tacna recorded the entry of 235,000 tourists (18.2%), the Binational Border Service Center in Tumbes reported the entry of 90,000 tourists (7%), while 69,000 tourists entered through the Desaguadero / Carancas / CEBAF Border Control Post in Puno (5.4%).

By the end of this year, Peru is expected to receive approximately 3.3 million foreign tourists, the best figure since the pandemic, according to Casa Andina. This would mean 32% more than the visitors it hosted in 2023.
