The coffee plantation renewal program in the northeastern region of the country has managed to recover 10,600 hectares to date through a public-private alliance. The manager of the National Coffee Board (JNC), Lorenzo Castillo, pointed out that the fruits would be seen in this year’s harvest.

This result has been possible thanks to the alliance between the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation, through the agricultural financing unit, the technical cooperation of the MOCCA-TechnoServe project and coffee-growing organizations. Thus, through concerted work, the renewal of coffee trees that were more than 25 years old was carried out, which had a production of 15 to 35 quintals per hectare.expected from this year’s harvest.

Likewise, 8,041 small producers from 15 coffee cooperatives, mostly associated with the JNC, benefited through the placement of S/130 million soles in credits financed with funds from Agroperú, through Agrobanco. The director of the Agroperú financing program, Iván Mena, indicated that the majority of the beneficiaries are in Cajamarca with 71% of all placements, highlighting that in said area there is a strong agrarian institutionality.

The representative of the coffee industry stressed that the renovation program is associated with the agroforestry actions carried out by coffee cooperatives with the aim of strengthening sustainable and environmentally friendly coffee growing, in addition to reversing the decline in Peruvian coffee production. He warned, however, that In these areas there is a problem of ownership that limits the development of small producers.

The program and various alliances are expected to increase the renewal to 50,000 hectares in the period 2025-2030, in order to generate a favorable impact on the economy of more than 25,000 coffee-growing families in different regions of the country.
