Dina Boluarte confirms Xi Jinping’s visit to Peru to inaugurate the Chancay megaport

President Dina Boluarte confirmed from China the visit of the president of that country, Xi Jinping, for the inauguration of the Chancay megaport, scheduled for November 2024.

From Shanghai, the head of state assured that the Cosco Shipping company, responsible for the construction and future operation of the terminal north of Lima, will find a favorable environment for foreign investments and a framework law that favors trade with Asia.

“We have a range of opportunities so that they can be interested in other types of projects and, in this way, continue strengthening bilateral business work,” Boluarte stressed.

In addition to offering the Peruvian government’s support for the installation of a Chinese industrial park in our territory, Dina Boluarte also stressed that the agreements signed with Cosco in 2021, which were the subject of a recent controversy with APN, will be respected.

“Hopefully, an electric vehicle assembly plant can be set up there, given the interest of both Peru and China in protecting the environment. In our country we have copper and lithium,” said the president.

Cosco: “Chancay will be China’s gateway to South America”

For his part, the president of Cosco Shipping, Wan Min, said that the megaport will form “a strong engine for the economic development of Peru and a model of economic-commercial cooperation.”

“Once its construction is completed, Chancay will become the most modern and intelligent port in South America,” he highlighted.

For the senior executive of the Chinese state company, the operation of the new port will promote the export of agricultural products, both from Peru and South America, to the Asian giant. Likewise, he stressed that Chancay will have the same technology and standards as its Shanghai counterpart.

“We are convinced that with the support of the president and the entire private sector present here, the Chancay megaport will become an important gateway for Peru and South America not only to Asia but to the rest of the world,” he concluded.

Gantry cranes arrived at the Chancay megaport

Meanwhile, this Thursday, June 27, the arrival of the first gantry cranes to the Chancay megaport also took place, as had been announced The Republic weeks ago. This is the second shipment with the STS cranes, 80 meters high.

There are a total of five ships that will set sail every 15 days to equip the terminal. As recalled, the Cosco terminal will be capable of receiving ships with more than 18,000 containers, thanks to its draft of 16 meters deep. At the moment, construction is more than 85% complete.
