After the coronavirus pandemic, one of the slogans of the Peruvian Government and businessmen is to recover the dynamism of tourism. And, as a result of the mandatory confinement and health restrictions, this activity is one of the few that is still far from its potential.
For this year, it is expected to close the gap in foreign visitors by 30.43%, considering that in 2019, we received 4.6 million tourists.
The Deputy Minister of Tourism, Madeleine Burns, affirms that we would be getting closer to it, since the preliminary figure for inbound tourism for this first quarter of the year not only exceeds that of 2023 by 25%, but would also comprise approximately 70 % of what was the first quarter of the year before Covid-19.
For his part, Ricardo Acosta, president of the Peruvian Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies (Apavit), points out that the tourist has an average ticket of US$500.
“A foreign tourist generally spends seven days, six nights here towards Cusco, Arequipa, Puno or otherwise Cusco-Machu Picchu only. The average tourist’s spending on accommodation and everything else can reach US$500, but this varies depending on the category of hotel they go to and the type of restaurants,” he said during a press conference.
That is, an income of US$1.6 billion would be recorded in Peru based on Mincetur’s prediction regarding the estimated number of inbound tourism travelers in the country this year: 3.2 million people.
On the other hand, the second vice president of Apavit, Hilda Paragulla, mentions that if a foreigner stays between two to three weeks, expenses could increase to reach US$1,850 if they are seniors —without considering the air investment; while in the case of backpackers, who are within a range of between 25 and 40 years old, expenses could be reduced even to US$1,400. The favorite destinations are Pisco, Ica, Nazca, Cusco, Puerto Maldonado, Puno and Arequipa.
The data
Role. The Apavit International Tourism Fair, with Promperú, in 2023 generated commitments of S/8.2 million. This year they hope to emulate the results and promote incoming tourism.
