Airports transported 3.5 million passengers in January 2024

Peru’s airports started 2024 on the right foot and transported 3.5 million passengers in the first month of the year alone, an increase of 21.5% and 9.1% compared to January 2023 and 2019 (year of the pre-pandemic), respectively.

Of this total, the Jorge Chávez international airport handled 2.2 million mobilizations, with an average of 57.1% for domestic flights and 42.9% for international flights. This represents year-on-year growth in January of 23.1%.

If we talk about domestic flights, 1 million 272,830 arrivals and 1 million 274,215 departures were recorded. Regarding international, Peruvian terminals recorded 458,030 arrivals (24.1% more than a year ago) and 483,189 departures.

Not including the capital, the departments that registered the highest passenger mobilization in January 2024 were Loreto (-7.9%), Piura (-13.5%), San Martín (+7%), Cusco (+74, 3%) and Arequipa (+51.3%).

Cusco would quadruple

In disaggregation, the department that grew the most was Puno, which transported 45,613 passengers by air, a year-on-year progress of +463%. However, it should be considered that the Inca Manco Cápac airport (Juliaca) was paralyzed for 110 days in January 2023 due to social conflicts.

Meanwhile, the department that fell the most in the first month of the year was Moquegua, which mobilized 2,545 travelers (-15.3%).

Here, the Cusco region deserves special attention, where the Chinchero airport, according to schedule, will have the capacity to handle 11 flights simultaneously and 4,200 operations per year, between landings and takeoffs.

However, until the beginning of the year the terminal only had progress of 12%, despite the fact that the MTC Minister himself, Raúl Pérez-Reyes, assured that it would “triple the capacity” of the Velasco Astete. For now, the regional governor, Werner Salcedo, has stated that they will not allow any delay beyond the planned inauguration date, in August 2025.
