Due to the change from winter to summer time, on the night from Saturday, March 30 to March 31 (Easter Sunday), we will sleep one hour less. We will move the clocks forward one hour – from 2:00 to 3:00. Every five years, the European Commission issues a communication with a timetable and recommendation for Member States to change the time – the latest one covers the period until 2026. However, the authorities of a small town in Spain announced that they do not intend to comply with this this time.
The Spanish town will not change time on Sunday
We are talking about the town of Tobarra in the province of Albacete. The so-called tradition has been cultivated there for centuries. tamborrada, which involves beating drums continuously for 104 hours. The drumming begins at 4 p.m. on Holy Wednesday and should not end until midnight on Easter. At this time, residents beat drums for “duty”. However, changing the time could mean that instead of 104 hours, drummers would beat 103 hours, and according to local authorities, this is an unacceptable violation of tradition.
– This would mean changing one of our greatest rituals – explained the town’s mayor, Manuela Garrido Rui, who does not want to lose even one hour of drumming. Therefore, the City Council issued a statement in which it informed that the time change in this city will not take place until Monday. The clocks there will have to be changed a day later. A similar approach was also taken in 2002, 2005, 2013 and 2016.
Tradition above all else
The tradition of the Spanish city was included in the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage in 2018. Historians place the origins of this custom in the 13th or 14th century. Legend has it that the people of Tobarra defended themselves against Muslim attack by beating a drum to simulate the existence of a large army. Another theory says that the tradition was born in the 16th century, after the establishment of the brotherhood responsible for organizing Holy Week.
